Currently my interest evolves around two themes. One is in appreciating the small moments and the detail of life that we sometime misses. Second is the way to utilized the benefit of computing power to seamlessly collect and provide us with adequate information, to enhances our ability of knowing.

Could distraction be use to distract us in our physical moment so that our body and mind have to be present in the physical moment? Come to think of it, when we contemplate on some thing we might just be distracted by our interest on that particular thing… getting late write more later…

I feel that this video reflect much of what I am thinking and writing about. I feel that to day we are bombarded with distraction in our mental state and physical state. In the mental state our consciousness is always shifting and changing thinking about our pass, future, and mind wondering. We go about our days passively. It is becoming ever harder to keep our mind in focus and active in the physical moment. When we go through our days our physical body might be walking, biking, or sitting, around people, natures, or interesting things in our surroundings, but our mind might be wondering else where, thinking about things that we are going to do, and things that we have done. Our minds begins to get further and further away from our physical existence we begin to miss out in the detail of life that is happening at the very moment we are in.
Colin Owens saids “Consciousnesses and time is elastic”. I agree. Time is structured in fix proportion, 24 hours a day, 60 minutes an hours, and 60 second in a minute. But the way we perceive time is never the same. Some times hours feel like minutes, vice versa.

This video explore an interesting way of looking at time. Introducing an interesting play on expectation and anticipation.
sample imagery:
There was a scene form a movie called “A perfect getaway” that was hidden in my subconscious that attentions have just cough up to (just remembered). On that scene the background slows down morphs into slow motion and to a stop, then went back to it’s original speed. I felt that this represent the kind of visual I want to pursue on this project. Creating the tension on the speed like an increase in friction of focus that finally stops time, but ones you louse it, the time slips right back to it’s original speed.
transcription from scene:
Some times it seems like nothing existed until we get there, until we put our eyes on like the whole f***ing world was manufactured fro our wants and needs. Do you know? Like if I take (took off his glasses). Like if I just turn my head, you know for just a minute an, but don’ tell me but does every thing just stop, just shut down. [back ground morphs into slow motion] Go in to some energy saving hibernation mode. [back ground froze] Till i choose to reactivate them by simply (turn his head with robot voice and point to the still image “tush”) [went back to actual speed].
The project is called “Stop and stare” (name could change). The inspiration of this name came from my neighbor a retired poet writer. He ones told me “you just have to look and keep looking, sometime you have to stare because natures is never the same”. This might not be his exact words but he was making a point that, we as an artist have to observe and be vigilant all the time. Our surrounding natures are newer the same, even a sun that sets every day will never look the same.
The concept is to show that there are more to what we see when we look. “more” as in depth not more as in quantity.
project description:
There will be a video playing on a screen, the video will be of an action that seems passive in real time but interesting in slow motion; like rain drops dripping of the side of a building; tree swaying on a windy day; wave breaking on sea shores. Ones the viewer look and stare at the screen the video will slow down. Using face recognition and timer. The longer they stare the slower the video gets. The speed of the video is controlled by the focus that the viewer have towards the screen. Revealing hidden beauty within a moment that can only be sustain by their focus and connection.
I want to use a high speed footage because I want to have a smooth and fluid transition between the real time and slow motion, and I also want the video to get really slow to see the unusual movement with in an action.
weight loss
I really like how his mechanic functions brings people together, and at the same time motivate the two to keep constant focus on them self and on each other’s action. So instead of only focusing on our action we have to focus on others as well. Reflecting on our own life’s, as we try to understand our counter parts we often have to focus on them as much as on our own to create and maintain balance in our connection. The other aspect that I like about it is the positive feedback from engagement, in this case is creation of an aesthetic visual cube animation.
Since the last final review (fall11). I have been thinking a lot about “positive reinforcement” and have been looking to find ways to include it in the interaction part of my projects. Positive reinforcement is a seamless addictive agent that drive viewer’s engagement. Like in the “stop and stare” I feel that the slow motion has an aesthetic beauty that will drive viewer to pursue.
I want to quote his description on the “weight loss” project, because I think he have an interesting path that he leads your thoughts through his concept. (“passivity will not suffice”)
” An interpersonal resonance calculator.
we’ve put a man on the moon. we’ve created an artificial heart. we’ve transmitted information to each other by pulsing electricity through metals. how can we be so capable and still find it so difficult to get along with each other?
weightloss asks two viewers to come together to create something beautiful - something that neither of them can create on their own. both viewers are asked to take direct physical action - passivity will not suffice. the rules of the game are unknown but it will be obvious when it works. weightloss explores the notion that when we work together, our reality is expanded. not to mention it just makes the process more fun. weightloss is a game where both players can win.”
